Stillness, Sounding, Melting - for guitar trio (2026)
duration 30′
Several years ago, I found myself in the silence after the rain at Yahiko Shrine in my hometown.
I listened to droplets falling from the building's eaves.
I was captivated by an irregular rhythm that somehow has a hidden structure, something beyond my understanding, and the silence between the droplets.
Time did not seem to pass through me.
Instead, it stayed with me.
With the silence between each droplet, time deepened vertically rather than flowing linearly.
This piece was composed from that experience and memory.
The rhythm is based on droplets from melting ice. For example, an eighth note corresponds to a single droplet.
Through this work, I re-express the vertical flow of time I experienced at the shrine, as well as the silence that deepens the time.
Performed by Masaya Ozaki, Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson, and Simon Valentin Hirt.
Stage design/Sound and video recording by Hiroki Kamoshida and Lilja María Ásmundsdóttir
