Masaya Ozaki is a New York/Iceland-based composer and performer born in Niigata, Japan. He composes music as a relational form intertwined with space, time, the body, environment, and material. He treats these five elements as musical materials that are equally important to sound.
He has been focusing on natural materials such as ice and water. In his solo performances, he uses the sound of water droplets from melting ice falling onto metal surfaces as sonic material. In ensemble works, he places melting ice in front of the performers, and integrates the rate of ice melting into time structures and rhythmic transformations. He seeks to let natural processes shape the music.
Ozaki’s work has been presented at Dark Music Days (Iceland), Extreme Chill Festival (Iceland), Dublin Fringe Festival (Ireland), and Borderline Noise Festival (Poland). He is an original member of the Spidernetwork collective, co-curates experimental music festivals in Iceland and founded Punch in the Mouth from the Inside, a concert series at Mengi featuring female and transgender artists.
He is currently working on an ongoing collaboration dwelling with Lilja María Ásmundsdóttir. He is a member of the Wandelweiser composer collective and contributed field recordings to Toshio Hosokawa’s opera Natasha (2025). He has released music on eilean rec., IIKKI, Dinzu Artefacts, and laaps.
He holds a B.Mus in Film Scoring from Berklee College of Music and an M.Mus in Composition from Iceland University of the Arts in Reykjavík.
尾崎雅也は新潟県出身のニューヨークおよびアイスランドを拠点に活動する作曲家また演奏家である。彼は音楽を単なる「音だけで完結する媒体」としてではなく、空間、環境、物質、時間、身体といった要素を音と同等に重要なものとして作品に取り込み、それらの相互作用によって成立するものとして捉える。
近年は氷や水といった自然物質を主題に作品を制作しており、ソロ・パフォーマンスでは金属面に落ちる氷の水滴の音をそのまま音素材として用いる。アンサンブル作品では、氷の融解速度を時間構造やリズムの変化に組み込み、自然現象そのものが音楽の進行を決定するような手法を展開している。
彼の作品は、アイスランドを代表する国際現代音楽祭「Dark Music Days」、実験音楽フェスティバル「Extreme Chill Festival」、アイルランド「Dublin Fringe Festival」、ポーランド「Borderline Noise Festival」など、欧州を中心とした国際的な現代音楽・前衛音楽の文脈で発表している。
また、実験音楽/アートコレクティブ「spidernetwork」の創設メンバーであり、アイスランドで音楽フェスティバルの共同キュレーションを担当。さらにレイキャビクにあるコンサート会場Mengiにて、女性、トランスジェンダー・アーティストに焦点を当てたコンサートシリーズ「Punch in the Mouth from the Inside」を立ち上げるなど、キュレーション活動も行っている。
現在はリリヤ・マリア・アスマンドスドッティルとの継続的プロジェクト「dwelling」に取り組んでいる。国際的な現代音楽コレクティブ、ヴァンデルヴァイザー楽派の一員として活動しているほか、細川俊夫によるオペラ「Natasha」においてフィールドレコーディングを提供するなど、現代音楽の最前線にも関わっている。
近年の活動として、大阪・関西万博関連プロジェクトへの楽曲提供や、NHKスペシャル・ドキュメンタリー作品の音楽を提供するなど、映像作品分野にも活動の幅を広げている。さらに、アメリカ公共放送PBSにてゴールデンタイム放送予定の長編ドキュメンタリー映画作品の音楽も担当している。
eilean rec.、IIKKI、Dinzu Artefacts、laapsなど、国際的な実験音楽・アンビエント系レーベルより作品を発表している。
作曲活動と並行して、レイキャビクを拠点とするエモ／アニメ／ドゥームメタルバンド「MC Myasnoi」のメンバーとしても活動中。
学歴としては、バークリー音楽大学映画音楽学科にて学士号（B.Mus）を取得後、アイスランド芸術大学にて作曲修士号（M.Mus）を取得。
