Masaya Ozaki is a New York/Iceland-based composer/performer born in Niigata, Japan. He approaches music not just as a sound medium, but as a relational form intertwined with space, environment, material, and listeners. He has recently been focusing on ice, water, and other physical materials in his compositions and performances to explore natural phenomena through music and find a balance between human intention and the world around us. He uses the sound of droplets hitting metal objects in solo performances and integrates the melting speed of ice into the rhythm of compositions.
Ozaki’s work has been presented at Dark Music Days (Iceland), Extreme Chill Festival (Iceland), the Dublin Fringe Festival (Ireland), and Borderline Noise Festival (Poland). He is an original member of the Spidernetwork collective, co-curates experimental music festivals in Iceland and founded Punch in the Mouth from the Inside, a concert series at Mengi featuring female and transgender artists. He is also a member of the Reykjavík-based emo anime doom metal band MC Myasnoi.
He is currently working on an ongoing collaboration dwelling with Lilja María Ásmundsdóttir. He is a member of the Wandelweiser composer collective and contributed field recordings to Toshio Hosokawa’s opera Natasha (2025). He has released music on eilean rec., IIKKI, Dinzu Artefacts, and laaps.
He holds a B.Mus in Film Scoring from Berklee College of Music and an M.Mus in Composition from Iceland University of the Arts in Reykjavík.
